3.26

因齋次，問僧：「喫得幾箇餬餅？」僧云：「喫得四箇。」師云：「爾為什麼鼻孔裏秖有一莖毛？」無對。師云：「脫空妄語。」代前語云：「直須慎初，又須護末。」

During a meal, he asked a monk, "How many sesame cakes can you eat?" The monk said, "I can eat four." The Master said, "Why do you have only one hair in your nostrils?" There was no reply. The Master said, "Empty lying and deceitful words." Answering on his behalf for the previous remark, he said, "One must be cautious at the beginning, and one must protect the end."
