3.30

因般米次，師以拄杖打僧一下云：「這箇師僧不去般米是不？」僧云：「般米入倉了也。」師云：「般米入倉了且置，阿誰喫飯？」僧便出去，師云：「脫空妄語漢。」又拈問僧：「作麼生免得不被主家道得脫空妄語？」代云：「為什麼壓良為賤？」又云：「因一事，長一智。」代是不處云：「和尚著甚來由？」

While carrying rice, the Master struck a monk with his staff and said, "Is this monk not going to carry rice?" The monk said, "The rice has already been carried into the storehouse." The Master said, "Putting aside carrying the rice into the storehouse, who eats the meal?" The monk then went out. The Master said, "A fellow of empty lies and deceitful words." He also brought it up and asked the monks, "How can one avoid being called a fellow of empty lies and deceitful words by the host?" Answering on their behalf, he said, "Why oppress the freeborn into servitude?" He also said, "A fall into the pit, a gain in your wit." Answering on his behalf for the place where he was asked 'Is this so?', he said, "What reason does the upādhyāya have?"
