3.32

師問修造僧：「甚處來？」僧云：「山上斫木來。」師云：「還斫得合盤麼？」僧云：「和尚放某甲過即道。」師云：「放爾過，作麼生道？」僧便禮拜，師便打。代云：「某甲也漝麼？」又云：「可惜成功不毀。」又云：「斫。」

The Master asked a monk engaged in construction, "Where have you come from?" The monk said, "I have come from cutting timber on the mountain." The Master said, "Were you also able to cut a matching tray?" The monk said, "If the upādhyāya lets me off, I will speak." The Master said, "I let you off; what do you say?" The monk bowed, and the Master struck him. Answering on his behalf, he said, "Am I like this too?" He also said, "A pity to complete the work without destroying it." He also said, "Cut!"
