3.40

問僧：「看什麼經？」僧云：「《般若經》。」師云：「經中道『一切智智清淨』是麼？」僧云：「是。」師云：「爾眼為什麼穿過石榴樹？」僧云：「古人何在？」師云：「古人即知，是爾不知。」無對。代云：「大有人不識勢。」

He asked a monk, "What sūtra are you reading?"
The monk said, "The Prajñāpāramitā Sūtra."
The Master said, "Does the sūtra say that 'all-knowledge (sarvajñajñāna) is pure'?"
The monk said, "Yes."
The Master said, "Why have your eyes pierced right through the pomegranate tree?"
The monk said, "Where is the ancient?"
The Master said, "The ancient indeed knew, but it is you who do not know."
There was no reply.
Answering on their behalf, [the Master] said, "There are plenty of people who do not recognize the situation."
