3.41

師問僧：「甚處來？」云：「嶺中來。」師云：「夏在甚處？」僧云：「招慶。」師云：「招慶有何言句？」僧近前應喏，師云：「一不成，二不是。」無對。師云：「酌然。」代云：「秖守是。」

The Master asked a monk, "Where have you come from?"
[The monk] said, "I have come from the Ling region."
The Master said, "Where did you spend the summer retreat?"
The monk said, "Zhaoqing."
The Master said, "What words and phrases does Zhaoqing have?"
The monk stepped forward and answered, "Yes."
The Master said, "One does not make it, two is not it."
There was no reply.
The Master said, "Clearly so."
Answering on their behalf, [the Master] said, "Only stick to this."
