3.42

師因齋次，拈起餕餡謂僧云：「擬分一半與爾，又却不分。」僧云：「為什麼不分？」師云：「為爾打野榸。」代云：「將食與人也不惡。」又云：「謝和尚供養。」又云：「和尚無端作麼？」

During the midday meal, the Master held up a stuffed pastry and said to a monk, "I intended to share half with you, but then I did not share it."
The monk said, "Why did you not share it?"
The Master said, "Because you beat about the bush."
Answering on their behalf, [the Master] said, "Giving food to others is not bad either."
He also said, "Thank you, Upādhyāya, for the offering."
He also said, "Why is the Upādhyāya acting without rhyme or reason?"
