3.47

師問新到：「什麼處來？」僧云：「郴州。」師云：「夏在甚處？」僧云：「荊南分金。」師云：「分得多少？」僧展兩手，師云：「這箇是瓦礫。」僧云：「和尚莫別有麼？」師云：「乾屎橛，一任咬。」代云：「若不言瑕，爭得玉轉。」

The Master asked a newly arrived monk, "Where have you come from?"
The monk said, "Chenzhou."
The Master said, "Where did you spend the summer retreat?"
The monk said, "At Fenjin in Jingnan."
The Master said, "How much [gold] did you divide?"
The monk spread his two hands.
The Master said, "This is rubble."
The monk said, "Does the Upādhyāya have anything else?"
The Master said, "A dried shit-stick—bite it as you like."
Answering on their behalf, [the Master] said, "If one does not speak of the flaw, how can the jade be carved?"
