3.58

問僧：「爾是甚人？」僧云：「知客。」師云：「客來將何秖待？」僧云：「隨家豐儉。」師云：「這箇是瓦椀竹箸，客來將何秖待？」僧云：「謝和尚慈悲。」師云：「鰕跳不出斗。」無對。師云：「爾問我。」僧便問：「將何秖待？」師便打。代初問處，便打，又云：「一盤飯兩椀茶。」又云：「貪觀天上月。」

He asked a monk, "Who are you?"
The monk said, "The guest master."
The Master said, "When a guest arrives, how do you entertain them?"
The monk said, "According to the family's means, rich or meager."
The Master said, "These are earthenware bowls and bamboo chopsticks; when a guest arrives, how will you entertain them?"
The monk said, "Thank you, Upādhyāya, for your compassion."
The Master said, "A shrimp cannot leap out of a bushel."
There was no reply.
The Master said, "You ask me."
The monk then asked, "How will you entertain them?"
The Master struck him immediately.
Answering on behalf of the monk's first question, he immediately struck, and also said, "A plate of rice, two bowls of tea."
He also said, "Covetously gazing at the moon in the sky."
