3.67

因普請，師三門下問僧：「因作什麼面目？」僧云：「和尚合知。」師云：「我即不知。」僧却問：「困作什麼面目？」師拈拄杖云：「遇長即長，遇短即短。」僧云：「未審困與麼道，和尚與麼道？」師云：「我也知爾親。」無對。代云：「爭知？」又代前語云：「老少黃白。」

During communal labor, under the triple gate, the Master asked a monk, "What is your tired expression about?"
The monk said, "The Upādhyāya ought to know."
The Master said, "I indeed do not know."
The monk asked back, "What is a tired expression about?"
The Master held up his staff and said, "Meeting what is long, it is long; meeting what is short, it is short."
The monk said, "I do not know: does tiredness speak like this, or does the Upādhyāya speak like this?"
The Master said, "I also know you are intimate [with it]."
There was no reply.
Answering on their behalf, [the Master] said, "How does one know?"
Also answering on behalf of the earlier statement, he said, "Old and young, yellow and white."
