3.72

問僧：「爾是向北人？」僧云：「是。」師以一摑，無對。師云：「爾問我。」僧却問：「和尚甚處人？」師又以一摑，無對。代前問處打一摑，又代後云：「仁義道中。」

[The Master] asked a monk, "Are you a man from the north?"
The monk said, "I am."
The Master struck him with a slap. There was no reply.
The Master said, "You ask me."
The monk then asked, "Where is the Upādhyāya from?"
The Master again struck him with a slap. There was no reply.
In place of the earlier question, he struck a slap. In place of the later, he said, "In the way of humaneness and righteousness."
