3.73

有僧粥後來見師，師云：「喫粥了也未？」僧云：「了也。」師云：「咬著露柱麼？」僧云：「咬著。」師云：「看硬著爾。」無對。代云：「也知和尚恐人不實。」又云：「硬阿誰？」

A monk came to see the Master after the morning gruel. The Master said, "Have you finished eating gruel yet?"
The monk said, "I have finished."
The Master said, "Did you bite into the exposed pillar?"
The monk said, "I bit into it."
The Master said, "Look at the hardness hitting you!"
There was no reply.
Answering on their behalf, he said, "I also know the Upādhyāya fears people are not genuine."
He also said, "Hard against whom?"
