3.85

師因喫茶了，云：「什麼人接盞子？」有僧便接，師云：「村裏老翁拜冬至。」無對。代云：「秖為行仁義，却招禍及身。」

The Master, after finishing his tea, said, "Who will take the cup?"
A monk stepped up and took it.
The Master said, "An old man in a village pays respects at the winter solstice."
There was no reply.
Answering on their behalf, he said, "Just because of practicing humaneness and righteousness, one brings disaster upon oneself."
