3.88

師問新到云：「把將公驗來。」僧云：「有人問了也。」師云：「由是念上大人。」僧云：「莫錯。」師云：「草賊大敗。」無對。代前語云：「且存仁義。」代後語云：「大似村鎮頭。」又云：「久嚮。」

The Master asked a newcomer, "Bring forward your official permit."
The monk said, "Someone has already asked."
The Master said, "This is still just reciting the primer."
The monk said, "Do not be mistaken."
The Master said, "The grass bandits have suffered a great defeat!"
There was no reply.
In place of the earlier words, he answered on their behalf, "For now preserve humaneness and righteousness."
In place of the later words, he said, "Very much like the head of a village town."
He also said, "Long looked up to."
