3.94

師問看經僧：「表首是什麼字？」僧拈起經，師云：「我也有。」僧云：「和尚既有，為什麼却問？」師云：「爭奈與麼何？」僧云：「有什麼過？」師云：「自屎不覺臭。」代云：「今日方知。」又云：「德山拄杖紫胡狗。」又云：「和尚此問大殺靈利。」

The Master asked a monk reading a scripture, "What character is at the beginning of the title?"
The monk held up the scripture. The Master said, "I have it too."
The monk said, "Since the Upādhyāya already has it, why do you ask instead?"
The Master said, "What can be done about it being like this?"
The monk said, "What fault is there?"
The Master said, "One does not smell the stench of one's own dung."
Answering on their behalf, he said, "Only today do I know."
He also said, "Deshan's staff, Zihu's dog."
He also said, "This question of the Upādhyāya is exceedingly sharp."
