黃檗在南泉為首座，一日捧鉢向南泉位中坐。南泉入堂見乃問：「長老！甚年中行道？」黃檗云：「威音王已前。」南泉云：「猶是王老師兒孫下去。」黃檗便過第二位坐，南泉便休。溈山云：「欺敵者亡。」師云：「不然，須知黃檗有陷虎之機。」溈山云：「子見處得與麼長？」

When Huangbo was the head monk under Nanquan, one day he held his bowl and sat in Nanquan's seat. Nanquan entered the hall, saw him, and asked, "Elder, in what year did you practice the Way?" Huangbo said, "Before the King of Awesome Sound [Bhīṣmagarjitasvararāja]." Nanquan said, "You are still Teacher Wang's descendant—step down!" Huangbo then moved to the second seat and sat down; Nanquan dropped the matter. Guishan said, "One who underestimates the opponent perishes." The Master said, "Not so; one must recognize that Huangbo possessed the dynamic to trap a tiger." Guishan said, "Has your view reached such depth?"
