溈山舉黃檗示眾云：「汝等諸人盡是噇酒糟漢，與麼行脚何處有今日？還知大唐國裏無禪師麼？」時有僧云：「只如諸方匡徒領眾，又作麼生？」黃檗云：「不道無禪，只是無師。」問師：「作麼生？」師云：「鵞王擇乳，素非鴨類。」溈山云：「此實難辯（溈仰師資鼓唱拈評，機語儘多，如具《臨濟錄》中者，茲不重載）。」

Guishan brought up Huangbo instructing the assembly: "All of you are dregs-eating fellows! If you go on itinerant practice like this, where will today ever be? Do you know that in the great Tang realm there are no Chan masters?" At the time a monk said, "Then what about those who guide disciples and lead assemblies in all quarters?" Huangbo said, "I do not say there is no Chan, only that there are no masters." He asked the Master, "How is it?" The Master said, "The goose king extracts milk; he is naturally unlike ducks." Guishan said, "This is indeed hard to distinguish." (The encounter dialogues between Guishan and Yangshan as master and disciple, echoing and evaluating each other, are very numerous; those already complete in the Record of Linji are not repeated here.)
