舉：「鹽官一日謂眾云：『虛空為鼓，須彌為椎，甚麼人打得？』眾無對。有僧舉似南泉，南泉云：『王老師不打這破鼓。』」師別云：「王老師不打。」

[The Master] cited: "One day Yanguan said to the assembly, 'With empty space as the drum and Mount Sumeru as the mallet, who can strike it?' The assembly had no answer. A monk reported this to Nanquan. Nanquan said, 'Old Teacher Wang does not strike this broken drum.'" The Master gave an alternative reply: "Old Teacher Wang does not strike."
