舉：「鹽官竪起拂子，問講華嚴僧：『這箇是第幾種法界？』座主沈吟，鹽官云：『思而知、慮而解，是鬼家活計，日下孤燈，果然失照。』」師代：「拊掌三下。」

[The Master] cited: "Yanguan held up his fly-whisk and asked a monk lecturing on the Huayan, 'Which of the dharmadhātus is this?' The lecturer hesitated in thought. Yanguan said, 'Knowing through thought and understanding through deliberation are the livelihood of ghosts; a lone lamp beneath the sun has indeed lost its illumination.'" The Master in his place: [He] clapped his hands three times.
