舉：「德山示眾云：『今夜不答話，問話者三十棒。』時有僧出禮拜，德山便打，僧云：『某甲話也未問，和尚因甚麼打某甲？』德山云：『汝是甚處人？』云：『新羅人。』德山云：『未跨船舷，好與三十棒。』」師云：「大小德山，話作兩橛。」

[The Master] cited: "Deshan instructed the assembly, saying: 'Tonight I will not answer questions; whoever asks a question gets thirty blows of the staff.' At that time, a monk came forward and prostrated. Deshan struck him at once. The monk said, 'I have not even asked a question; why does the Upādhyāya strike me?' Deshan said, 'Where are you from?' He said, 'A man of Silla.' Deshan said, 'Before you had even stepped across the gunwale of the boat, you deserved thirty blows.'" The Master said, "Great or small Deshan, he split his words into two halves."
