舉：「北院通問夾山：『目前無法，意在目前，不是目前法，非耳目之所到。豈不是和尚語？』夾山云：『是。』北院乃掀倒禪床，叉手而立。夾山起來，打一拄杖，北院便下去。」師云：「是他掀倒禪床，何不便去？須待夾山打一棒了去，意在什麼處？」

[The Master] cited: "Beiyuan Tong asked Jiashan, '"Before the eyes there are no dharmas; the intention is before the eyes. It is not a dharma before the eyes; it is not reached by ears and eyes." Is this not the upādhyāya's saying?' Jiashan said, 'It is.' Beiyuan then overturned the meditation seat and stood with folded hands. Jiashan got up and struck him once with his staff; Beiyuan then went down." The Master said, "Since he overturned the meditation seat, why did he not just leave immediately? Why must he wait for Jiashan to strike him once before leaving—where does the intention lie?"
