修山主問澄源禪師：「乾闥婆王奏樂，直得須彌岌峇，海水騰波，迦葉作舞，作麼生會？」源云：「迦葉，過去世曾作樂人來，習氣未除。」修云：「須彌岌峇，海水騰波，又作麼生會？」澄源休去。師代云：「正是習氣。」

Hermit Xiu asked Chan Master Chengyuan, "When the gandharva king plays music, so that Mount Sumeru wobbles and the ocean water surges in waves, and Kāśyapa dances—how is this understood?" Yuan said, "In past lives Kāśyapa was once a musician; his habit-energy has not yet been eliminated." Xiu said, "Mount Sumeru wobbling and ocean water surging in waves—how is this understood?" Chengyuan stopped. The Master spoke in substitution: "Precisely the habit-energy."
