師問修山主云：「仰山四門光道，應眼時全身耳，應耳時全身眼，兄作麼生會？」修云：「眼裏底，作耳裏底用；耳裏底，作眼裏底用。」師云：「正是弄精魂。」修却問：「和尚如何？」師再舉一遍，修方省。

The Master asked Hermit Xiu, "Yangshan's four-gate radiance says: when responding to the eye, the whole body is ear; when responding to the ear, the whole body is eye. How do you understand this, brother?" Xiu said, "What is in the eye is used in the ear; what is in the ear is used in the eye." The Master said, "This is precisely playing with the conscious spirit." Xiu in turn asked, "How about the upādhyāya?" The Master cited it once more, and only then did Xiu awaken.
