師問修山主：「毫釐有差，天地懸隔，兄作麼生會？」修云：「毫釐有差，天地懸隔。」師云：「恁麼會又爭得？」修云：「和尚如何？」師云：「毫釐有差，天地懸隔。」修便禮拜。（東禪齊云：「山主恁麼祇對，為甚麼不肯？及乎再請益，法眼亦秖恁麼道，便得去。且道，疑訛在甚麼處？若看得透，道上座有來由。」五祖戒云：「法眼劈脊便打。」保寧勇云：「修山主當時也好向法眼道：『與麼會又爭得？』」徑山杲云：「法眼與修山主，絲來線去，綿綿密密，扶起地藏門風，可謂滿目光生。若是徑山門下，更買草鞋行脚始得。何故？毫釐有差，天地懸隔，甚處得這消息來？」）

The master asked Mountain Master Xiu, "'An error of a hair's breadth makes a separation wide as heaven and earth.' How do you understand this, elder brother?" Xiu said, "'An error of a hair's breadth makes a separation wide as heaven and earth.'" The master said, "How can you understand it like that?" Xiu said, "How does the upādhyāya understand it?" The master said, "'An error of a hair's breadth makes a separation wide as heaven and earth.'" Xiu then bowed. (Dongshan Qi said, "The mountain master answered in that way; why did [Fayan] not accept it? But when he inquired again, Fayan spoke in just the same way, and he could accept it. Tell me, where is the doubt and error? If you can see through this, you can say the sthavira has come from somewhere." Wuzu Jie said, "Fayan should have given him a strike across the back right away." Baoning Yong said, "Mountain Master Xiu could well have said to Fayan at that time: 'How can you understand it like that?'" Jingshan Gao said, "Fayan and Mountain Master Xiu—silk coming and thread going, continuous and close-knit, upholding the house style of Dizang—could truly be called a dazzling spectacle. If it were under the gate of Jingshan, one would have to buy straw sandals and go on itinerant pilgrimage all over again to get it. Why? An error of a hair's breadth makes a separation wide as heaven and earth—from where did you get this news?")
