6.19

上堂，舉：「法眼問修山主：『毫釐有差，天地懸隔，爾作麼生會？』修云：『毫釐有差，天地懸隔。』眼云：『恁麼會，又爭得？』修云：『某甲只恁麼，未審和尚作麼生？』眼云：『毫釐有差，天地懸隔。』修禮拜。」師云：「法眼與修山主，絲來線去，綿綿密密，扶竪地藏門風，可謂滿目光生。若是德山、臨濟門下，更買草鞋行脚始得。為甚如此？毫釐有差，天地懸隔，甚處得這箇消息來？」

Ascending the hall, [the Master] cited: "Fayan asked Mountain Master Xiu: ''A fraction of a millimeter's discrepancy is as vast as the distance between heaven and earth'—how do you understand this?' Xiu said: ''A fraction of a millimeter's discrepancy is as vast as the distance between heaven and earth.'' Fayan said: 'Understanding it like that, how can that do?' Xiu said: 'I am just like this; what does the Venerable say?' Fayan said: ''A fraction of a millimeter's discrepancy is as vast as the distance between heaven and earth.'' Xiu bowed."
The Master said: "Fayan and Mountain Master Xiu: thread coming and string going, continuous and dense, upholding the style of Dizang's gate, it can be said that their whole view was radiant. Were they under the gates of Deshan or Linji, they would have had to buy more straw sandals and go on foot travel before they could manage! Why is it like this? 'A fraction of a millimeter's discrepancy is as vast as the distance between heaven and earth'—from what place did this news come?"
