The master ascended the hall and said: "Sthaviras, the weather is cold; why must you come up here? Tell me: is it good to come up, or is it good not to come up? Some sthaviras might say: 'Not coming up is actually good. Where is not [the place], so what is the use of coming up again?' Other sthaviras might say: 'One cannot be one-sided like that; one must also come to the upādhyāya's place to get it.' Sthaviras! Tell me: have these two people made any progress in the Buddhadharma or not? Sthaviras, in truth neither has got it, having not the least bit of progress; the ancients called them iron hammers without holes, no different from those born blind or born deaf. If another sthavira were to come out and say: 'Neither of those two has got it. Why is it so? Because they are attached, therefore they have not got it.' Sthaviras! If all your itinerant pilgrimage is like this, and all your deliberations are like this, what are you seeking? Is it merely that you wish to wag your lips and tongue, or do you have something else in view? You fear that they are attached, but what are they attached to? Are they attached to principle, attached to phenomena, attached to form, or attached to emptiness? If it is principle, how is principle to be grasped? If it is phenomena, how are phenomena to be grasped? Attachment to form and attachment to emptiness are also like this. This is why this mountain monk usually says to you sthaviras: The buddhas of the ten directions and the kalyāṇamitras of the ten directions are constantly lowering their hands; you sthaviras are constantly receiving their hands. There is a time when the buddhas of the ten directions lower their hands; where is the place where you sthaviras constantly receive their hands? If there is something to understand, it is good to understand it. If you have not understood, do not say that all is completely and fully grasped. Sthaviras! When going on itinerant pilgrimage from place to place, you must also be thorough and summon some spirit; do not merely rely on a little wisdom and let the time pass away."
