舉：「昔有一老宿住菴，於門上書心字，於窓上書心字，於壁上書心字。」師云：「門上但書門字，窓上但書窓字，壁上但書壁字。」（玄覺云：「門上不要書門字，窗上不要書窓字，壁上不要書壁字。何故？字義炳然。」）

He cited: "In the past, there was a senior monk living in a hermitage who wrote the character 'mind' on the door, wrote the character 'mind' on the window, and wrote the character 'mind' on the wall." The Master said, "On the door, merely write the character 'door'; on the window, merely write the character 'window'; on the wall, merely write the character 'wall'." (Xuanjue said: "On the door there is no need to write the character 'door'; on the window there is no need to write the character 'window'; on the wall there is no need to write the character 'wall'. Why is this? The meaning of the characters is already manifest.")
