[The Master] cited: "Formerly, an elder kept a novice boy who was completely ignorant of monastic etiquette. An itinerant monk arrived and taught the novice etiquette. In the evening, seeing the elder return from outside, the boy went forward to pay his respects. The elder was astonished and asked the boy, 'Who taught you this?' The boy replied, 'A certain sthavira in the hall.' The elder called the monk over and asked, 'Sthavira, as you wander from place to place on itinerant pilgrimage, what kind of mind and conduct is this? I have raised this boy for two or three years, and he was quite fine just as he was. Who told you to ruin him? Pack your baggage at once and get out!' In the pouring dusk rain, he was driven away." The Master examined this, saying: "The ancient's revealing of even a little bit of his family tradition in this way is very strange. Tell me, what was his intention?"
