師云：「諸上座！穿耳胡僧到此土來，便問祖師西來意，假如白馬馱經時，又問箇甚即得？故經云：『無法可說，是名說法。』且道許說不許說？若道許說，又作麼生說？若道不許，龍宮海藏，白馬馱來。與諸上座商量，祖教兩名，是一是二？量數收得他麼？所以百丈云：『佛是過量人。』量數管他不著。經云：『唯佛不墮諸數。』喚作自受用三昧，攬得麼？快須攬取，免得被他天魔外道，詐現吉凶，惑亂真源。珍重。」

The Master said, "Elders! When the ear-piercing barbarian monk arrived in this land, people immediately asked about the meaning of the ancestral master coming from the West. If it were at the time when the white horse carried the sūtras, what should one have asked then? Therefore a sūtra says: 'There is no Dharma that can be spoken; this is called speaking the Dharma.' Tell me, is speaking permitted or not permitted? If you say it is permitted, how can it be spoken? If you say it is not permitted, the dragon palace and the ocean treasury were carried here by the white horse. I deliberate with you elders: are the two names 'patriarch' and 'teaching' one or two? Can measures and numbers encompass it? Therefore Baizhang said: 'The Buddha is a person beyond measure.' Measures and numbers cannot manage him. A sūtra says: 'Only the Buddha does not fall into various numbers.' It is called the samādhi of self-enjoyment—can you grasp it? Quickly grasp it, so you avoid having heavenly demons and non-Buddhists deceptively display good and bad omens to confuse and disturb the true source. Take care."
