1.80

師云：「大眾！當時拘尸城，畔跋提河邊，北首面西，龍天共湊，十六國王，河沙釋梵諸天龍鬼，五百力士，千萬比丘，各持供養，至如來所，唯有迦葉一眾，末後而來，散花燒香，旋遶金槨禮拜，哀慟慘然，山林變白，大地蒼茫，禮世尊足。當此之時，如來神力，槨示雙趺，令迦葉禮敬摩觸，意為對人天大眾前，付囑迦葉，流通法藏，迄至于今，正法不泯。所以西河今日，因問而言，略陳少意，若欲廣引昔緣，恐妨問事。更有問者麼？如無，應供歸堂去。」

The Master said: "Great assembly! At that time, in the city of Kuśinagara, beside the Hiraṇyavatī River, head to the north and facing west, dragons and devas gathered together, the kings of the sixteen countries, devas, dragons, and spirits as numerous as the sands of the Ganges, Śakra and Brahmā, five hundred champions, and thousands of myriads of monks, each bearing offerings, arrived at the Tathāgata's place. Only the assembly of Kāśyapa came last of all, scattering flowers, burning incense, circumambulating the golden coffin in prostration, mourning with bitter sorrow, the mountain forests turning white, the great earth vast and dim, as they bowed to the World-Honored One's feet. At this very time, by the Tathāgata's supernatural power, both feet were shown from the coffin, allowing Kāśyapa to pay homage and touch them, with the intent of entrusting Kāśyapa before the great assembly of humans and devas to circulate the treasury of the Dharma, down to the present day, so that the true Dharma does not perish. Therefore today Xihe speaks on account of this question, briefly presenting a small part of the meaning. If I wished to cite past conditions at length, I fear it would hinder the asking of questions. Are there any more questioners? If not, receive offerings and return to the hall."
