At an evening gathering, the Master said: "In former days, this old monk visited Master Che of Shimen. He ascended the hall and said: 'The original Buddha-nature of all sentient beings is, for example, like the bright moon in the sky; only because floating clouds veil and obstruct it does it not appear. It serves as brightness and illumination, as path and road, as boat and oar, as reliance and abode. The original Buddha-nature of all sentient beings is also like this; only because the heavy clouds of afflictions obscure it does it not appear clearly reflecting and shining.' At that time, I, Shanzhao, asked the Master: 'When the bright moon cannot be veiled by the clouds over the sea, and its rays extend straight through the crystal palace, how is it then?' Shimen said: 'Stone walls, mountains, and rivers are no obstacle; outside the realm of Jambudvīpa, it ascends at will.' 'In that case, then a thousand sages together pass down the bottomless bowl, and the people of the times all sing the song of great peace.' Shimen said: 'How is the melody of great peace sung?' 'It does not fall into the five tones, nor does it concern the six temperaments.' Shimen said: 'Is there still anyone who can harmonize with it?' 'I ask the Master not to begrudge your compassion.' Shimen said: 'Virtuous one, take good care of it yourself.'"
