Ascending the hall, the Master said: "Expediently establishing the sudden and the gradual, provisionally speaking of the sacred and the ordinary, healing the wild child's many doubts, and rescuing the attained person's slight awakening. Personally clarify your own nature, do not falsely seek elsewhere; walking and staying joyful, speaking and silent placid and still, true constancy flowing forth, eternally abandoning annihilation and eternity, the ocean of wisdom clear and still, the sky of principle brightly shining—how about it? Bring forth a phrase!" A monk asked, "What about at just such a time?" The Master said, "No place to lay a hand." "In that case, then outside the curtain someone hears." The Master said, "Directly confronting the capacity, there is no reflection; bending oneself for the present moment." "What is the present moment?" The Master said, "The entire body is not separated." He asked, "What is the body solitary and exposed amid dust?" The Master said, "An ingenious mind cannot seek it; boring into ice instead produces smoke." "In that case, then it is not dust." The Master said, "Not being dust is also an illness." He asked, "What is the World-Honored One's preaching without speaking?" The Master said, "In the northern lands the reed flowers are white; in the southern skies the snow is not cold." "What is Kāśyapa's hearing without hearing?" The Master said, "Ācārya, where did you hear it?" He asked, "What kind of person is one who does not keep company with the ten thousand dharmas?" The Master gave a shout. The monk said, "This is a jackal's yelp; I wonder, what kind of person is it?" The Master said, "Head split open." He asked, "'The East Mountain and the West Ridge are green'—what is the meaning of this?" The Master said, "People rarely reach the thousand-year-old icy crags; a mass of mist and fog is enough for dragons to travel." "In that case, then there is an intercalary month every three years, and the Double Ninth in the ninth month." The Master said, "On the Five Peaks the dragon energy is abundant; the golden realm reaches the azure sky—alike in not awakening to the ancestors." "What about when one does not believe in the Great Way?" The Master said, "Smashing the lapis lazuli egg, the young phoenix breaks through." "Today I personally see the Master." The Master said, "Calculating the road three thousand miles away."
