Snow falling, the Master instructed the assembly, saying, "Shaolin of old—how does it differ from today? However, although past and present are not the same, the Dharma is not two. The Second Patriarch said, 'Your disciple's mind is not at peace; please, Master, pacify my mind.' The First Patriarch said, 'Bring your mind here, and I will pacify it for you.' The Second Patriarch said, 'I have searched for my mind, but in the end it cannot be found.' The First Patriarch said, 'I have pacified your mind for you.' Right then he clearly awakened to his own mind, which is not inside, outside, or in between; having attained definitive faith, he did not seek it from another, and taking it upon himself he had no further doubt or obstruction. Worthies! Right now, is there anyone who can take it upon themselves? Just this one who distinctly and attentively listens to the Dharma—this is your true mind, worthies. Do not let various sense-objects turn it around, or drift along with things. How does it differ from the Second Patriarch? Today in Xihe, I seal for you worthies that this mind is indeed the Buddha-mind; do not doubt it any further. Together listen to a verse: / A true Chan practitioner in the assembly of Xihe, / a person standing in the snow before Mount Zixia: / personally seal your own mind—the mind is Buddha; / do not let any other dust arise outside the mind."
