「龍樹行化至西印土，見提婆問：『汝佛性如何？』報言：『布施，我求福利，非解佛性。汝會佛性，當為我說。』師曰：『欲學佛道，先除我慢，心生敬仰，發大慚愧，方得佛性。云何汝今不生恭敬，而欲得也。』提婆求哀。」別云：「因一事，長一智。」

"Nāgārjuna traveled to convert people in Western India. Meeting Deva, he asked: 'What is your Buddha-nature like?' [Deva] replied: 'Giving alms, I seek merit and blessings; I do not understand Buddha-nature. You understand Buddha-nature; you should explain it to me.' The master said: 'If you wish to learn the Buddha Path, first eliminate self-conceit, give rise to reverence in your mind, and generate great shame and remorse; only then can you attain the Buddha-nature. How is it that now, without giving rise to reverence, you still desire to attain it?' Deva begged for mercy." Differing [from the original words], he said: "Due to one event, one's wisdom increases."
