師於熙寧二年己酉三月十六日，上堂辭眾云：「山僧才輕德薄，豈堪人師？蓋不昧本心、不欺諸聖，未免生死，今免生死；未出輪回，今出輪回；未得解脫，今得解脫；未得自在，今得自在。所以大覺世尊於然燈佛所無一法可得，六祖夜半於黃梅又傳箇什麼？」乃示偈曰：「得不得，傳不傳，歸根得旨復何言。憶得首山曾漏泄，新婦騎驢阿家牽。」至十七日午時，端坐示寂（已上並出《續燈錄》）。

On the sixteenth day of the third month in the second year of the Xining reign era, a yiyou year, the Master ascended the hall to take leave of the assembly, saying: "The mountain monk's talent is slight and his virtue thin; how could he be fit to be a teacher of humans? Yet because I did not obscure the original mind and did not deceive the sages: not having escaped birth and death, now I escape birth and death; not having transcended saṃsāra, now I transcend saṃsāra; not having attained liberation, now I attain liberation; not having attained ease, now I attain ease. Therefore, the Greatly Awakened World-Honoured One had not a single dharma to attain in the presence of Dīpaṅkara Buddha; at midnight at Huangmei, what indeed did the Sixth Patriarch transmit?" Thereupon he gave a gāthā, saying: "Attaining or not attaining, transmitting or not transmitting, / returning to the root and realizing the principle, what more is there to say? / I recall that Shoushan once leaked it out: / 'The bride rides the donkey, and the mother-in-law leads it.'"
