示眾云：「雲從龍、風從虎，五九四十五，叢林將為向上關，同安不打這破鼓。為甚麼不打？守株待兔，豈是智人？避色逃聲，何名作者？祖不云乎：執之失度，必入邪路；放之自照，體無去住。」

He instructed the assembly, saying: "Clouds follow the dragon; wind follows the tiger. Five times nine is forty-five. The monastic groves take this as the barrier leading upward, but Tong'an does not beat this broken drum. Why not beat it? Watching a tree-stump waiting for a hare—how could that be a wise person? Avoiding forms and fleeing sounds—how could that be called an adept? Did not the Patriarch say: 'Clinging to it, one loses measure, and will surely enter false paths; letting it go, it illuminates by itself, its substance having neither going nor staying'?"
