Ascending the hall, he said: “Where worldly people dwell, I do not dwell; where worldly people walk, I do not walk. Clearly understanding the explicit purpose in this, one must know how to plunge one's whole body into the fire pit.” Making a stroke with his fly-whisk, he said: “Foul smoke billows, red flames rage fiercely; those whose eyes are not yet clear are all inside it. From the past, the ancient sages all, without exception, entered the pit of birth and death and went into the fire of ignorance to pull out sentient beings. All of you, just how will you enter? If someone can enter, they can be said not to burn in fire and not to drown in water. If you cannot enter, not only can you not benefit yourself, but you also cannot benefit others. Having failed to benefit yourself and benefit others, shaving the crown and wearing the square robe are of utterly no benefit.” After a long pause, he called out to the great assembly. The assembly raised their heads, and the Master said: “The ox's head goes out, the horse's head turns back.”
