舉：「德山因廓侍者問：『從上諸聖，向什麼處去也？』山云：『作麼作麼？』廓云：『勅點飛龍馬，跛鼈出頭來。』山便休去。明日山浴出，廓過茶與山，山撫廓侍者背一下云：『昨曰公案作麼生？』廓云：『這老漢方始瞥地。』山又休去。」師云：「德山持聾作啞，雖然暗得便宜；廓公掩耳偷鈴，爭奈傍觀者醜。」

He brought up: “Because Attendant Kuo asked Deshan, ‘Where have all the sages from of old gone?’, Deshan said, ‘What? What?’ Kuo said, ‘An imperial order selected flying-dragon horses, yet a lame turtle pokes its head out.’ Deshan then dropped the matter. The next day, as Deshan came out from bathing, Kuo served tea to Deshan. Deshan patted Attendant Kuo once on the back and said, ‘What about yesterday’s public case?’ Kuo said, ‘This old fellow has only just now caught a glimpse.’ Deshan dropped the matter again.” The Master said: “Deshan played deaf and mute; although he secretly gained the advantage, Kuo covered his ears while stealing the bell—how could he help looking disgraceful to bystanders?”
