舉：「興化謂克賓維那曰：『汝不久為唱導之師。』賓曰：『不入這保社。』化曰：『會了不入？不會了不入？』賓曰：『總不恁麼。』化拈棒，賓擬議，化便打，復曰：『克賓維那，法戰不勝，罰錢五貫，充設堂飯（一本，設饡飯一堂）。』至來日齋時，自白槌曰：『克賓維耶，法戰不勝，不得喫飯，抽單出院。』」師云：「克賓維那失錢遭罪，有理難伸；興化以剛決柔，未足光也。」

He brought up: “Xinghua said to Kebin the karmadāna, ‘Before long, you will become a guiding teacher.’ Kebin said, ‘I will not enter this guild.’ Xinghua said, ‘Having understood, you will not enter? Or not having understood, you will not enter?’ Kebin said, ‘It is not like that at all.’ Xinghua took up his staff; Kebin hesitated, and Xinghua immediately struck him, saying further, ‘Karmadāna Kebin has lost the Dharma battle; he is fined five strings of cash to provide a meal for the hall’ (one edition has: ‘provide a hall-full of mixed meals’). When it came to mealtime the next day, [Xinghua] struck the gavel himself and said, ‘Karmadāna Kebin, having lost the Dharma battle, may not eat; remove his bedding and expel him from the monastery.’” The Master said: “Karmadāna Kebin lost money and suffered punishment, having right on his side yet finding it hard to state; Xinghua overcame softness with hardness, but it is hardly worth glorifying.”
