Because a monk arrived bearing a letter, the Master ascended the hall and brought up: “Xuansha had a monk deliver a letter up to Xuefeng. Xuefeng ascended the hall, opened it, and saw three sheets of blank paper. He then showed them to the assembly and said, ‘Do you understand?’ The monk said, ‘I do not understand.’ Xuefeng said, ‘Gentlemen a thousand miles apart share the same wind.’ The monk returned and related this to Xuansha. Xuansha said, ‘That old fellow on the mountain peak missed it without even knowing it.’” The Master said: “In the monastic groves, divergent interpretations are beyond counting. Some say: ‘The moment Xuefeng received the letter, he saw through him without a word; opening it to see blank paper, he presented it to the assembly and spoke further of principles—this was missing it twice over.’ Some say: ‘Xuefeng’s view is not necessarily inferior to Xuansha’s; Xuansha’s view is not necessarily superior to Xuefeng’s. These two, father and son, met and echoed each other, valuing the circulation of their words.’ Some say: ‘If Xuansha had not had these words, how would the Buddha Dharma have reached today?’ They utterly fail to trace the ancestral source, merely indulging the reckonings of their cognitive consciousness. Such views might be pardonable if they only deluded oneself, but they delude others. Today, Tong'an does not spare his eyebrows to bestow a gift upon the assembly: It cannot be said that Xuefeng lacked merit, but having been seen through by Xuansha, down to the present day he cannot clear himself.”
