上堂，舉：「智門寬問五祖戒：『暑往寒來則不問，林下相逢事若何？』戒云：『五鳳樓前聽玉漏。』寬云：『爭奈主山高案山低。』戒云：『須彌頂上擊金鐘。』」師云：「戒禪師只解步步登高，且不會從空放下。若是歸宗則不然，遠涉煙塵則不問，林下相逢事若何？云：漢王有道成無道，爭奈案山低主山高，范蠡論功却不功。」

Ascending the hall, [the Master] brought up [the following]: "Zhimon Kuan asked Wuzu Jie, 'I do not ask about the going of summer and the coming of winter; what is the matter when meeting in the forest?' Jie said, 'Listening to the jade water-clock before the Five Phoenix Tower.' Kuan said, 'What about the host mountain being high and the desk mountain low?' Jie said, 'Striking the golden bell atop Mount Sumeru.'" The Master said, "Chan Master Jie only understood climbing higher step by step, but did not know how to let go from the void. If it were Guizong, it would not be so: 'I do not ask about traveling far through smoke and dust; what is the matter when meeting in the forest?' Say: 'The King of Han had the Way and became without the Way.' 'What about the desk mountain being low and the host mountain high?' 'Fan Li discussed merit, yet had no merit.'"
