上堂，云：「三祖曰：圓同大虛，無欠無餘，良由取捨，所以不如。在諸佛而不增，處凡夫而不減。既不增不減，為什麼有證無上菩提？為什麼有墮在生死？只為良由取捨，所以不如。諸佛無心，故證無上道；凡夫有心，故墮在生死。所以教中道：夢幻空花，如水中月；生死涅槃，同空花相。於此見得，畢鉢巖前休話會，曹溪路上好商量。」以拂子擊禪床，下座。

Ascending the hall, [the Master] said: "The Third Patriarch said: 'Completely round like great empty space, / Without lack and without surplus; / Precisely because of grasping and rejecting, / Therefore it is not as it truly is.' In the buddhas it does not increase; among ordinary beings it does not decrease. Since it neither increases nor decreases, why is there the realization of unexcelled bodhi? Why is there falling into birth and death? Simply because 'Precisely because of grasping and rejecting, / Therefore it is not as it truly is.' The buddhas are without mind, hence they realize the unexcelled Way; ordinary beings have mind, hence they fall into birth and death. Therefore it is said in the teachings: 'Dreams, illusions, and sky-flowers are like the moon in water; birth-and-death and nirvāṇa are identical to the characteristics of sky-flowers.' If you can see into this: before the Pippala Cave, cease all talk and assembly; on the road to Caoxi, it is good to confer." Striking the Chan seat with the fly-whisk, he descended from the seat.
