Ascending the hall, [the Master] said: "Indeed, for a monk to dwell in the mountains is good for leaving desires; tranquility is the way of a śramaṇa. There are scriptures to open and read; there are kalyāṇamitras to visit and question. Therefore a monk asked Great Master Hongjue of Yunju, 'What is it ultimately like for a monk?' Jue said, 'Dwelling in the mountains is good.' The monk bowed and stood up. Jue said, 'How do you understand it?' The monk said, 'Ultimately, for a monk in realms of good and evil, birth and death, adversity and favor, the mind is immovable like a mountain.' Jue gave him a blow with his stick and said, 'You betray the ancient sages and ruin my descendants!' Jue then asked a monk standing by, 'How do you understand it?' That monk bowed, stood up, and said, 'Ultimately, for a monk dwelling in the mountains, the eyes do not look at dark and yellow colors, and the ears do not listen to the sounds of strings and pipes.' Jue said, 'You betray the ancient sages and ruin my descendants!'" The Master said, "Tell me, how can one utter a phrase that neither betrays the ancient sages nor ruins descendants? If someone can speak it, then everywhere green mountains are none other than bodhimaṇḍas; if one cannot speak it, 'Cold and heat shorten your life; ghosts and spirits envy your blessings.'" Striking the Chan seat with the fly-whisk, he descended from the seat. (All the above are from the *Eihei kōroku*.)
