上堂，舉：「僧問南院：『日月迭遷，寒暑交謝，還有不涉寒暑麼？』院云：『紫羅抹額繡裙腰。』進云：『上上之機今已曉，中下之流如何領會？』院云：『炭堆裏藏身。』」師云：「南院一期利物，應病與藥，則不可也。若向衲僧門下，天地懸殊。且道衲僧有什麼長處？咄！」下座。

Ascending the hall, he cited: "A monk asked Nanyuan, 'Sun and moon alternate in change, winter and summer trade their places—is there that which does not touch winter and summer?' Nanyuan said, 'A purple silk headband, an embroidered skirt's waist.' The monk continued, 'Those of supreme capacity have now understood; how are those of medium and low capacity to comprehend?' Nanyuan said, 'Hiding one's body in a heap of charcoal.'" The Master said, "Nanyuan's temporarily benefiting beings, giving medicine according to the sickness, was not wrong. But if brought to the gate of a patch-robed monk, heaven and earth are far apart. Tell me, what advantage does a patch-robed monk have? Bah!" He descended from the seat.
