上堂，云：「今日五月一，仲夏改旦，諸知事首座大眾，道體安樂。一夜長連床上，展脚縮脚，不由別人；天明起來，餬餅餕餡，橫咬竪咬，飽即便休。當與麼時，不是古、不是今，不思善、不思惡，鬼神不能尋其迹、萬法不能為其侶，地不能載、天不能蓋。雖然如此，須是眼裡有睛、皮下有血。眼若無睛，何異瞎漢？皮下無血，何異死人？三十年後，不得錯怪黃蘗。」下座。

Ascending the hall, he said: "Today is the first of the fifth month, the dawn of midsummer. May the administrators, the head monk, and the great assembly enjoy bodily peace and joy in the Way! Overnight upon the long collective platform, extending the legs and retracting the legs does not depend on anyone else. Rising at dawn, [eating] paste-cakes and leftover fillings, biting crosswise and biting lengthwise—once full, you simply stop. At such a time, it is neither past nor present, thinking neither of good nor of evil; ghosts and spirits cannot trace its tracks, and the myriad phenomena cannot be its companions; the earth cannot bear it, and heaven cannot cover it. Even though it is like this, you must have pupils within your eyes and blood beneath your skin. If your eyes have no pupils, how are you different from a blind fellow? If there is no blood beneath your skin, how are you different from a dead corpse? Thirty years hence, do not mistakenly blame Huangbo!" He descended from the seat.
