上堂，眾集，乃喝一喝，良久云：「一事也無，喝箇什麼？」又喝一喝，復云：「一喝兩喝後作麼生？」以拂子向空中畫一畫云：「百丈耳聾猶似可，三聖瞎驢愁殺人。」擊禪床，下座。

Ascending the hall, when the assembly gathered, he gave a shout. After a long pause, he said: "There is not a single matter—what are you shouting about?" He gave another shout, and again said: "After one shout and two shouts, what then?" Using the fly-whisk, he drew a stroke in the air and said: "Baizhang's deafness was still somewhat bearable; Sansheng's blind donkey grieves one to death." Striking the Chan seat, he descended from the seat.
