千群萬隊水牯牛，不出溈山這一隻，無心管帶常現前，作意追尋尋不得。不大不小有筋力，一身兩號少人識，隨緣放去草木青，遇晚收來天地黑。收放須得鼻頭繩，若不得繩無準則，世間多少無繩人，對面走却這牛賊。

Among thousands of herds and myriad troops of water buffaloes, / None surpasses this single one of Guishan's. / Mindlessly attending to it, it is constantly present; / Purposely pursuing it, it cannot be found. / Neither large nor small, it has sinew and strength; / One body with two names, few recognize it. / Let go according to conditions, the plants and trees are green; / Gathered in when evening falls, heaven and earth are dark. / To gather or release, you must have the nose-rope; / If you do not have the rope, there is no standard. / How many ropeless people are there in the world / Who, face to face, let this ox-thief get away!
