1.23

上堂，云：「雲蓋傳箭令下，釋迦老子為先鋒，菩提達磨為殿後，陣勢既圓，天下太平。且道：不動步一句，作麼生道？」良久云：「不經一事，不長一智。參！」

Ascending the hall, he said: “Yungai transmits the arrow and issues the order: old man Śākya is the vanguard, and Bodhidharma brings up the rear. The battle array is complete; all under heaven is at peace. And tell me: without moving a step, how do you say a phrase?” After a long pause, he said: “Without going through an affair, one does not grow in wisdom. Engage!”
