上堂云：「佛祖生冤家，悟道染泥土，無為無事人，聲色如聾瞽。且道如何即是？恁麼也不得，不恁麼也不得，恁麼不恁麼總不得。忽有箇漢出來道：恁麼也得，不恁麼也得，恁麼不恁麼總得。則向伊道：我也知儞向鬼窟裏作活計。」

Ascending the hall, he said: "Buddhas and patriarchs produce enemies; awakening to the Way soils one with mud and dirt. People of non-action and no-affairs are deaf and blind to sounds and sights. And tell me, how is it right? Like this will not do; not like this will not do; both like this and not like this will not do at all. If suddenly a fellow were to come forth and say, 'Like this will do; not like this will do; both like this and not like this will all do,' I would just say to him, 'I know that you are making a living inside a ghost cave!'"
