2.19

上堂，僧問：「如何是道？」師云：「治平郡。」學云：「如何是道中人？」師云：「赤心為主。」學云：「未審道與道中人相去多少？」師云：「名傳天下。」乃舉：「僧問南泉：『如何是道？』泉云：『平常心是道。』又龐居士問馬大師：『不與萬法為侶是什麼人？』大師云：『待爾一口吸盡西江水即向爾道。』」師云：「為復是同是別？同則神出鬼沒，別則醉後添盃。畢竟如何？待爾念得熟，向爾道。」

Ascending the hall, a monk asked, "What is the Way?" The Master said, "Zhiping Commandery." The student asked, "What is the person within the Way?" The Master said, "A loyal heart serving the ruler." The student asked, "I wonder, how far apart are the Way and the person within the Way?" The Master said, "His name is renowned throughout the empire." He then cited: "A monk asked Nanquan, 'What is the Way?' Nanquan said, 'Ordinary mind is the Way.' Also, Layman Pang asked Great Master Ma, 'Who is the one who is not companions with the myriad dharmas?' The Great Master said, 'Wait until you swallow all the water of the West River in a single gulp, and then I will tell you.'" The Master said, "Are they the same or different? If the same, gods emerge and ghosts vanish; if different, adding a cup after getting drunk. In the end, how is it? Wait until you have recited it until it is familiar, and then I will tell you."
