2.72

上堂，舉：「達磨大師云：『誰得吾正宗，出來，與汝證明。』尼總持云：『據某見處，如慶喜見阿閦佛國，一見更不再見。』達磨云：『汝得吾皮。』道育云：『據某見處，實無一法當情。』磨云：『汝得吾肉。』二祖禮三拜，依位而立。磨云：『汝得吾髓。』」師云：「當時若見他三人恁麼道，各人好與三十棒。只如白雲，今日也合喫二十九棒，留一棒與汝諸人。其間若有知痛痒者，不辜負先聖，亦乃得見白雲。其或未知，堂裏喫粥喫飯更須爛嚼，多見是渾圇吞却。」

Ascending the hall, he cited: "Great Master Bodhidharma said, 'Who has attained my authentic lineage? Come forward, and I shall verify it for you.' The nun Zongchi said, 'According to my view, it is like Ānanda beholding the Buddha-land of Akṣobhya: seen once, it is never seen again.' Bodhidharma said, 'You have attained my skin.' Daoyu said, 'According to my view, there is truly not a single phenomenon that clings to sentiment.' Bodhidharma said, 'You have attained my flesh.' The Second Patriarch bowed three times and stood in his place. Bodhidharma said, 'You have attained my marrow.'" The Master said, "At that time, had I seen those three speak thus, I would have given each thirty blows of the staff. As for Baiyun today, I should also take twenty-nine blows, leaving one blow for all of you. If among you there is one who knows pain and itch, he will not fail the ancient sages and will also get to see Baiyun. But if you do not yet know, when eating gruel and eating rice in the hall you must chew thoroughly; all too often I see you swallowing it whole."
